Why I think Milk doesn't help you grow...
Okay, the gland that releases HGH & other hormones is called the Pituary Gland, which is a pea sized gland located behind the bridge of your nose.
I havent done a lot of research, but just thinking logically, milk doesnt help you grow taller. Calcium is for bone strength. To grow bones, you need HGH dont you? &Milk doesn't stimulate the Pituary gland.
Actually wouldnt milk make the gap between the ephiseal (spelling) plate be smaller since the bone grows more dense... o_O
Like I said I havent done research which youll probably all criticise me for hehe.
Im just trying to think logically & I just wanted to share my point of veiw.

its the calcium and vitamin d as well as the protein in the milk that does the job.

RE: Why I think Milk doesn't help you grow...
I actually JUST covered this in my Bio 100 class yesterday!
The pituitary gland is actually located at the base of your brain near the top of your spinal cord and aids in releasing HGH when it is given signals by other parts of the brain.
As for milk not helping... not true. As stated it is the Vitamin D in the milk which helps the bones absorb the calcium in the milk and retain it. It's why certain cereals have calcium as well as Vitamin D. =) (I am addicted to Lucky Charms myself haha) And to grow bone calcium is very important... without it, bones would not be strong and thus would not grow, making someone have a shorter stature.

I think you need to sort out a bit of facts, the pituitary gland is situated at the base oof your brain.
From (http://www.gynaeonline.com/images/pituitary_gland.gif)

Milk is important, while it does not help growth DIRECTLY, it still helps overall. Milk contains Vitamin D, it also has the 8 essential amino acids that our body does NOT produce, which is essential for growth. Milk also has calcium, which is important in strengthening bones, without strong bones, we will not grow (See : Osteoporosis).

Soya milk isn't better for you in any particular way, it is simply an alternative to milk. Soya milk is nutritionally close to cow's milk, though most soya milk commercially available today is enriched with added vitamins such as vitamin B12. It naturally has about the same amount of protein (but not the same proteins) as cow milk. Natural soya milk contains little digestible calcium as it is bound to the bean's pulp, which is insoluble in a human. To counter this, many manufacturers enrich their products with calcium carbonate available to human digestion. Unlike cow's milk it has little saturated fat and no cholesterol, which many consider to be a benefit.
