I hope Obama wins. I feel he'll be better for both the economy and the environment. He seems to be more moderate in terms of foreign policy too, although how much they'd differ here in practice I'm not really sure.

The thought that Sarah Palin could be a heartbeat away from Presidency is a frightening prospect too.

It could just be me,

I think if Obama wins, it will be an unseen incoming disaster.

RE: The upcoming US election

McCain all the way. If Obama becomes a President this country will go downhill. I mean Obama might give a good speech but he doesn't know much about foreign policies and we don't need to train anyone especially now. Also, he hasn't done much, "community organizer" oh plss ,McCain on the other hand has done so much and was most of the time against Bush. Obama has done good for mostly African Americans, McCain has done good for the entire America and its the truth whether u like it or not. "He seems to be more moderate in terms of foreign policy too" would really want someone like that to become a President? u want a strong leader to deal with lunatics like Iran's President Ahmadinejad who just doesn't understand normal human language no matter what. you'll remember my words , if Obama becomes a president we're screwed.

RE: The upcoming US election

These are difficult times we live in. And to be honest Brooklyn Girl, I don't want a strong leader as American President if that means being gun-ho and aggressive in foreign policy, and eager to go into war without exploring all other avenues. Sarah Palin herself said she wouldn't mind a conflict with Russia. See how lightly that has been taken! She's got no quarrels about starting a second Cold War, which would be an utter disaster, especially at a time when the world economy is in tatters and we are at a pivotal point in terms of the environment. Spending a huge amount more on military/ nuclear arms, and all the costs incurred with going to war would be a real shitter right now, when the 2 things I mentioned are so pressing, the environment especially. There would be little to no money to decrease carbon emissions and reduce the dependance on coal, oil and gas.

McCain has the slogan "Drill Baby Drill" - to "solve" the energy crisis, he wants to vastly increase the number of off-shore oil rigs. In the long-term (or perhaps medium-term) these will run out and the same problems will remain, and it only increases the dependance on these energy sources. I do think nuclear power has to be explored more, in that it could sustain us for a lot longer, although it takes so long to build/decommission plants that plans/action has to be taken years and years in advance. Ultimately we need to be switching to renewables on a massive scale - wind, solar, tidal, hydroelectric, possibly geothermal. Electric cars would be another good move in the next 30-40 years, even though I quite like cars as they are now and have only been driving for a year. The long and short of it is that I can't see McCain making the right choices in terms of the energy crisis.

The same applies for the environment, in fact it ties in as increasing dependancy on coal/oil/gas etc. would increase carbon emissions further. I feel that Obama would be more proactive in reducing emissions, increasing recycling/reusage etc. and generally making America a lot greener. I just hope the damage hasn't been done already.
As a side note, it seems like the Amazon rainforest is massively influential on carbon emissions, I forget the figure I heard from a recent TV documentary, but it's mind-boggling. I hope this is sorted too!

As for the economy, McCain himself admitted that is "isn't his strong point". Well, fantastic, great. Although I do feel that both parties have some good ideas on this, I would prefer Obama. Perhaps the Democrats would over-tax, whereas the Republicans would under-tax, both would have their implications and consequences.
And for tackling the housing crisis, and rising unemployment problems, I'm not sure. I haven't heard enough from either for this, although I imagine for Americans it would have a lot more importance compared to other issues than it would for non-Americans like me.

I do agree that Obama is largely an unknown quantity, and perhaps I have been swayed slightly because he's so charismatic, intelligent, likeable and representative of change. I do genuinely feel that he's the better candidate, and has better policies. I don't necessarily think that McCain is awful, but I do largely prefer Obama. However Sarah Palin frightens the shite out of me - I won't cite her being inexperienced and ignorant (in reference to some interviews she's done where she's been clueless about some issues), because I'd be something of a hypocrite, but she really does seem to be a right-wing warmonger, and it's frankly not good.

Oh yeah, Brooklyn Girl, why is it that America is 'allowed' to have nuclear weapons, whereas "lunatics" like the Iranian President aren't? Do you not see the double-standard here? Is America really that self-righteous? The same applies for other countries with nuclear weapons who try to stop other develop nuclear arms. I think we can all agree that any use of nuclear weapons would be an absolutely massive cock-up, and it'd end up with most countries that have them using them, and we'd probably all die. We do need to avoid this yes, and it does concern me a little when there is a potential threat developing arms who might actually use them - N Korea, Iran, possibly, so I myself am split on this. Which is the only nation to have ever used a nuclear weapon...what with them being millions of times more powerful than that one nowadays we can't really afford the risk anymore. I wouldn't like to see either nation I mentioned possess arms when under an unstable dictatorship, but can you not see how hypocritical it is to say that Iranians need to be stopped, when you don't seem to mind America having the weapons?

RE: The upcoming US election

If Obama wins, I'm buying a swat shield and a sword to protect myself from racist and facist action. Ahmadinejad will hopefully soon be replaced by Maryam Radjavi, someone who the US gov. supports as well. It's only a matter of time before democracy is brought to Iran.

It's funny how this years election has finally opened up a very sad truth about the culture here in the US. Politics are a good thing, but people who are so egocentric and absolutist aren't the right kind of mental machinery. Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, all these countries have a rich history of agnostic philosophers. And I don't mean agnostic about the idea of "god." Agnostic in all things. That's why these philosophers where also the first quantum physicists, because the ideas of Newtownian absolutism was old science to them. But look at what the Empiricist bastards did to Western Euro culture AGAIN. They bred a whole generation of atheists who only believe in empirical evidence but somehow don't understand that empirical evidence in itself is absurd. And the Christians are the same. The Muslims and the Jews, the ones living in America, they all think the same. Absolute, egocentric, anthropocentric, ethnocentric, it just won't end easy. It's sad when you look 800 years back and find poets like Rumi who wrote the Masnavi playfully picking apart the sort of thoughts people here thought to be "ahead of the curve" still posses. And it's sad that that there can be such enigmatic people like Buddhas in the poorest nations but not a single person in one of the richest countries in the world who can take it easy.

Oh and McCain wants a system of trickle down economics, and that just doesn't fly with me.
