The dutch diet, once and for all..

It doesn't make you grow taller than your destined genetic height. However, the diet is worth striving for since it contains essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are helpful in maximizing your growth potential. Excersing and getting a proper amount of sleep is important as well.

In Sweden we consume a lot of dairy products like cheese, yoghurt, and most importantly milk. As for me I drink about 33 fl oz per day. The milk consumption depends on the person and vary by household. Some young athletes drink excessive amounts consuming nearly twice as much of the recommended daily intake. I have friends that even drink 100 fl oz per day and it is pure madness! We also eat a fair amount of cheese on a daily basis. Oftentimes we put it on breads to make sandwiches. Yoghurt is nowadays pretty common. It is incorporated in most dishes.

Swedes also eat a lot of bread and potatoes as the country's diet consists of 60 percent carbs (fats 30, protein 10-15). Some alternatives that are becoming more popular are whole wheat pasta, bulgur and quinoa.

Our fat sources mainly consist of fish, meat, egg and butter. Fish like mackerel, tuna and salmon is usually put on sandwhiches that we eat for breakfast. As Omega 3 is becoming a more important issue many Swedes choose to replace meat with fish. However, liver pâté is still put on breads to make sandwiches for lunch. We also eat chicken and other kinds of meat with low fat content. Eggs are a common breakfast alternative and may also be put on sandwhiches together with butter.

My point is, the dutch diet isn't in any way unique. In fact, most countries in western Europe, Scandinavian in particular, eat a moderate amount of fats, protein and carbohydrates. Even though cheese and milk contain protein and fat that are neccessary for growth, carbs should not be neglected. Contrary, it should make up a big amount of your calorie requirement. You should aim for potatoes and whole wheat products since they usually have lots of vitmains, minerals and proteins.

The dutch are growing taller, it is a wellknown fact and it remains a mystery. Whatever the reason is, it isn't their diet. It is something that we haven't yet discovered. Since it is pretty interesting subject, I really hope that we soon will learn more about this.

RE: The dutch diet, once and for all..

Logically you're right.

If it was something in the diet it wouldn't only be the Dutch and the big gap between the Netherlands and Britain or Belgium would be a lot smaller. However second generation immigrants do tend to grow taller in the Netherlands if you compare them to those who didn't. Surely if it would be the diet the whole mystery would have been solved already and if people maintained a dutch diet they would grow taller and that would have been noticed by now.. but it's not.
